The cold and the heat applied to the area with pain soothe the discomfort. The difference lies in the time of the injury:
If the pain is recent (less than 72 hours), applied COLD.
The cold reduces swelling and pain. Recommended for acute injuries, bruises or sprains. Apply between 5 and 15 minutes, with no direct contact with the skin.
If it hurt for days, apply HEAT.
The heat promotes the circulation and relaxes. Recommended for contractures or bad posture. Apply between 15 and 25 minutes with water bag or heating pad.
The duration of effect varies from person to person. If you go to heal the wound, or relieve chronic pain, usually you will need weekly sessions.
If it is for prevention or pleasure, have a massage every week or two can make a big difference. Even a massage monthly is beneficial.
